VFD
Here we will discuss several possible meanings, what the organization is, and the possiblilties of the Baudelaires being trained.
THE ESSENCE OF VFD
VFD is, essentially, a secret organization where children (referred to as neophytes) are 'taken' from their homes (by means of a grey van with tinted windows) and are trained to--well, we're not entirely sure. But here's what we do know:
- VFD was started as 'a noble organization'
- It experienced a schism, a wrord which here means, 'it split up into two oppsing parties'.
- There is specualtion that the OFD is the opposing party of VFD, and that OFD may stand for 'Olaf's Fire Department'.
- In The Slippery Slope, it is revelaed that VFD may possibly mean 'Volunteer Fire Department'.
- VFD uses the iniltas VFD for everything related to it. Therefore, we can safley assume that Valorus Farms Dairy had something to do with VFD, as well as the Vineyard of Frgrant Grapes/Drapes.
- VFD uses several well thought-out codes, such as the Sebald Code.

VFD CODES
SEBALD CODE
This code, invented by the famous film maker Gustav Sebald, is a fairly easy code for a VFD-er to remember, but is also very well hidden. the code goes like this:
1. A bell rings. (or in print the word, 'ring' is typed/written.)
2. Then, the immediate next word is the first coded word.
3. Count ten words, and you have the next coded word at the eleventh.
4. Continue like this, until you reach the sound/word 'ring'.
'VFD' INITAL CODE
If a memebr of the orginization sees somtehing with the letters, 'VFD' in the heading, they know a code is contained.
I.E.: VERY FUNNY FELLOW is changed to VERY FUNNY DUDE, alerting a VFD-er to the code contained therein.
VERSE FLUCTUATION DECLERATION
Verse flucuation decleration is when a certain letter or word is changed in a poem or other piece of writing. The Volunteer then replaces the omitted words/letters, and the code is revealed.
If the original message was:
In sleep he sang to me,
In dreams he came
And a VFD member received the message:
In slep he hang to he,
In dreams he cam
The Volunteer would see that the ‘e’ in ‘sleep’ was missing, the ‘s’ in ‘sang’ was changed, ‘me’ became ‘he’ and ‘came’ lost the ‘e’; the Volunteer would then write down the missing or changed letters:
Esme
The Volunteer would then be alerted.
